Many of you know about my struggles with Social Media use (okay, addiction).

My ADHD brain easily gets addicted to stories, narratives, and infinite scrolls, especially when they’re designed by a whole flock of media engineers to be as addictive as possible.

I’ve been trying to kick this habit for years, with varying degrees of success.

But this past weekend, I had an experience that drastically and immediately altered my desire to engage with social media and I haven’t used it all week.

More importantly than not using social media, I haven’t had the desire to use it.

For me the desire not to use it is more important in the long term because, sure, we can use our will for an hour or even a few days to avoid doing things we know we shouldn’t do. But it’s a lot easier to maintain avoidance if you don’t want to do the thing the first place.

And I have good reasons to want to avoid Social Media… there are alot of other things I’d rather do with my life! I’d rather read, study, make art, connect with friends, take political action, be present in my body, brainstorm, clean my house, play with my cats, there are so many I’d rather be doing!

In case it isn’t obvious, all of the above has to do with power.

If I can’t pull myself away from doing the thing I DON’T want to do, in order to do the thing I DO want to do, then I am disempowered.

(Bonus points if you can guess who gets the power I lose when I spend my time on social media, rather than making art or love or whatever).

The theme of the Aries Season Witch Guide this month is empowerment, which at first glance might seem abstract, a lofty goal meaning… what exactly?

The most basic definition of power is “the ability to act or produce an effect;” i.e. power is the ability to do what you want to do.

Being empowered (in magic this is known as “working power-filled”) means having the energy and capacity to do the things you want to do.

Where do we get that energy? How do we cultivate and sustain it? How does witchcraft help us do this?

Find out how to cultivate power by joining our Live Chat today on the Substack APP at 12pm PST.

I’ll also be sharing what I did this weekend to help me find my power again after a grueling beginning to the year.

Hope to see you there! More instructions on how to join us below…

Yours in power,

Amanda

Power beaming at you from Hilma af Klint.

Reasons to Join the Live Chat:

  • the Live Chats on the APP are written, rather than spoken, so everyone gets a chance to speak, even people who are normally too shy

  • the written format gives you a chance to think slowly and deliberately, and you’ll have a record of what’s said so you can have it for future reference

  • these chats are designed to help us wrestle with challenging topics so that you can come to your own conclusions and build confidence in your perspective

  • because they’re written, you don’t have to get ready or be seen, and you can do them at work and pretend you’re working (huzzah!)

  • you can do the chat from your computer (rather than your phone) if you go to my homepage and click Chat on the top menubar.
