Inside: How the full moon in Virgo can help you get unstuck; a discussion of something I learned in my first quarter of my PhD program; information about the moon ritual on Thursday; and some important reminders for subscribers.
At UCLA last quarter, I discovered I really didn’t know what a methodology was.
Obviously, before I started my PhD, if people said the word methodology, I wasn’t like, “what on earth can you mean by that strange word?!”
I knew what a methodology was in theory, but in practice I did not.
Since then I’ve learned that – in academia at least – a methodology is the system you use to guide your research to make sure it’s careful and thorough.
Further, it’s the exact, step-by-step strategy for how you plan to do your work.
You can have a decolonial methodology, an historical methodology, a structuralist methodology… the point is that you have one.
When I first started to learn about methodology, I felt annoyed by it.
(I know myself well enough to understand that I often feel annoyed by new concepts. I’ve made my peace with that. My annoyance is like that irritating but lovable acquaintance who always shows up at gatherings. Hello, annoyance my old friend).
“Methodology” annoyed me because… how was I supposed to identify my approach before I’d even done my research. Like, what?
BUT THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT: THEY MAKE YOU NAME YOUR METHODOLOGY BECAUSE YOU NEED IT TO GUIDE YOU.
I’m telling you this not just to commiserate with other people having an “academic journey” (although, solidarity friends) but because I have come to realize that we witches need methodology too. YOU NEED A METHODOLOGY. Here’s why…
In my private practice as a witch, people often come to me for example, because they want to get closer with their ancestors, or to develop their intuition, or to read tarot, or to be happy… But they’re stuck. And they don’t know what to do next.
THAT, my friends, is why you need methodology. So that you know what you’re doing. So that you don’t get lost.
If you say ancestral work is important to you and someone asks, “What’s your ancestral practice?” And you reply, “Ummm, communing with them?”
Then, I’m sorry to say you do not yet have a methodology.
A methodology would be more like a recipe for communing with your ancestors. For instance, you might use prayer as a methodology:
First you sit quietly for five minutes, then you ring a bell, light some frankincense, draw a circle three times around an object from your ancestral homelands, and say ancestor, ancestor, ancestor until the flame of the candle leaps, and then you say your thoughts to your ancestors out loud. Finally, you sit quietly and listen.
Do you see the difference between “communing” and having a methodology? One is actionable and pushes you forward, you know what you’re doing. The other is confusing, turns you in a circle, and gets you lost.
If you’re feeling stuck, you probably don’t have a methodology.
What I’m getting at here is that if there’s something you want to do, but you feel lost or stuck, and you need help figuring out how to do it, you’re in luck...
