By the roots of my hair some god got hold of me.

I sizzled in his blue volts like a desert prophet…

— Excerpt from The Hanging Man by Sylvia Plath

What is a Prophet?

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a Prophet is a bearded man with a staff high on mountain top. Wind whips at his clothes while he thunders his voice up to the clouds, calling down the light and the rain.

I think of the Sibyls and the Oracles of yore, sitting on their tripods over a deep crevasse, burning laurel leaves wreathing their heads in smoke as they whisper riddles to the pilgrims on bended knees.

There’s power in the word “Prophet”. A Jupiterian power, power of the thunder god and the snake goddess, the voice of truth, power, and inspiration.

A prophet is a bridge between the ordinary and the divine. They receive messages and visions. They share these gifts with their communities, who trust them.

People like MLK, Greta Thunberg, Simone Weil, Gloria Anzuldua, Octavia Butler, and Wovoka – Paiute creator of the Ghost Dance.

These are people who’re able to open themselves to the voices of the spirits of places and of the ancestors, people who inspire their communities to create and hope.

In witchcraft, each of us has the capacity to be a Prophet. And this full moon, the Full Moon in Sagittarius, can guide us to find our own Prophetic Voice.

Ritual Tip: How to listen to your inner prophet

Light a candle and get in a comfortable position with the intention of listening for deep wisdom or guidance. Open yourself, become porous, I often imagine my pores opening, or imagine I have a thousand eyes all over my body that allow me to “see the light,” (i.e. whatever messages want to come through). Relax. If you’re not seeing or getting anything, relax more. Trust. Pay attention to whatever comes up without judgement.

When you come out of your meditation, THEN you can analyze to see how whatever came up — images, words, memories, sensations — applies to the question you were holding.

Note: if you have questions, we’re going to be in deep practice around this at the ceremony tonight. Hope you can make it!

  • Grounding meditation

  • A special offering

  • Tarot spread

  • Journal Prompt
