A myth of fire and hunger…
Humans had been working hard all year. They were boney and lean, hungry and looking forward to the festival where they would feast and celebrate in honor of all the earth had given them.
The Titan, Prometheus, was in charge animal sacrifice, and he decided to make two piles of meat from which Jupiter (Zeus) could select one for himself before the feasting began. The other would be given to humanity.
Prometheus loved humanity. He knew how hungry they were and how hard they had worked to raise the cattle for the sacrifice. Feeling it was unjust that the gods should receive the best rewards when they had done none of the work, Prometheus devised a plan.
Of his two piles of meat, he made one of inedible bones and sinews, which he covered with marbled, delicious-looking fats. The other pile was of choice, juicy meat, which he covered with unappetizing organs and entrails. He then offered the two piles for Jupiter to choose.
Obviously, Jupiter chose the best for himself.
When he realized he’d been tricked, he took his revenge by banning humans from using fire. They could no longer work with metals, cook their food, or warm themselves at night.
As the humans suffered, it tortured Prometheus, who was said to have created these vulnerable creatures himself out of clay.
Eventually, able to bear their misery no longer, he begged a bit of fire from Helios the Sun, and carried an ember down to earth hidden inside a hallow reed.
Once on earth, he spread the fire everywhere.
He gave it to farmers, to shop keepers, to goat herds hidden deep in the mountains. He gave it to mothers sewing by candle light and aunties baking bread. He spread the fire so far and so wide he knew no gods could ever take it away from the humans again.
Fire is the substance of inspiration. Like myth, fire holds the power of the primordial realms. Fire is the power of transformation. Many gods believed that humans were unfit to wield such power.
Jupiter was furious. For bringing humanity the divine gift of fire, he punished Prometheus.
Chained naked to a rock, every day the King of the Gods sent an eagle to come peck out his liver. And every night Prometheus’ liver would grow back, and he would shiver in the freezing night winds only for the same torment to be repeated the following day…
What does the story of Prometheus have to do with the Jupiter conjunct Uranus transit coming up on the 20th of April?
Myths are the conveyors of primordial power, they are the portholes into the realm of the gods.
The gods are the Old Ones, the ancient knowledges, processes, truths, and memories that have been collecting since the beginning of time. Myths are how we know these powers.
Astrology is a way, in our myth poor culture, of keeping myths alive.
Like the planets themselves, through astrology, our myths do not stagnate but stay in motion. It is movement that IS life itself.
You have the opportunity now to make use of the medicine of these living myths, during this, the most important astrological transit of the 2024.
On April 20th, the planets Jupiter and Uranus are aligning in the sign of Taurus to form what is called a conjunction. This alignment won’t happen in Taurus again until 2107.
A conjunction is when the planetary energies form an alliance, bringing their powers together as one. With this collaboration, the archetypal goals of each planet can be achieved.
In his book Cosmos and Psyche, famed philosopher Richard Tarnas convincingly links the planet Uranus with the myth of Prometheus. [Tarnas, pp. 92-97… highly recommend this book if you’re interested in knowing more about this].
According to Tarnas, Uranus is “the principle of change, rebellion, freedom, liberation, reform and revolution, and the unexpected breakup of structures; with sudden surprises, revelations and awakenings, lightning-like flashes of insight, the acceleration of thoughts and events; with births and beginnings of all kinds; and with intellectual brilliance, cultural innovation, technological invention, experiment, creativity, and originality…
… Uranus transits are linked to unpredictable and disruptive changes; hence the planet is often referred to as the ‘cosmic trickster’”. [Tarnas, 93]
Jupiter, on the other hand is, according to Tarnas, “the principle of expansion, magnitude, growth, elevation, superiority; the capacity and impulse to enlarge and grow, to ascend and progress, to improve and magnify, to incorporate that which is external, to make greater wholes, to inflate, to experience success, honor, advancement, plenitude, abundance, optimism, enthusiasm, exuberance, joy, joviality, fecundity and fortune.”
Expect shake ups in the world and in your life…
Fire has the power to create and destroy. It must be used with wisdom and care.
Prometheus hoped that humanity would use it to nourish themselves, to bring enlightenment and warmth.
But if we look around we can see that fire has been put to horrific use: bombs, guns, electronic fences, electric chairs.
Our creator, Prometheus, gave us a gift, and humanity used it profanely, abyssmally.
Each myth contains within it a medicinal message told in code. Like fire, myths have the power to transform us. But, they can also destroy.
In the Prometheus myth both Jupiter and his father Ouranos (Uranus, a titan, father sky) are part of the old guard, the establishment.
In the story above, Jupiter is the Old King, greedy and vengeful. But in astrology Jupiter is also wisdom and benevolence. He guides us to realize our most warmhearted aspirations.
As Tarnas argues it, Uranus the planet is Promethean in nature (it makes sense in the text - read it if you doubt me), he appears to us now in the guise of revolutionary and liberator.
All suffering, even yours, has its roots in the established order (aka hegemony, for all you Gramscian Marxists out there).
Your struggle as a single mother, your chronic illness, your hatred of your job, your despair about Palestine, all if it has its roots in the old guard clinging to the seat of its power.
We each metabolize the medicine of myth differently. Each of us must decide how to use the fire that will be shared with us on April 20th, 2024.
You have the opportunity now to liberate yourself and others. Make the most of it!
