Inside: A quick tip on working with dreams for Pisces season and a reminder to come to the Live Chat on the Substack App today at 12:30pm pst.
We often think of dreams as visions that happen inside our head when we are sleeping. But a big part of magic and ritual is finding ways to externalize these visions so that we can know them through our other senses.
I find that I often dream of spiders. I have my theories as to what they “mean” but there is always more for me to know and learn. I think of the works of Louise Bourgeois and her spiders. What would it feel like to make those huge metal pieces? What would it feel like to stand inside one as you were making it?
What if you could make a magical tool out of a dream image? Like, what if I were to make a spider rattle? I could use it before I write (spiders are story tellers), or to induce a trance before I ask for advice (remember how Charlotte the spider was an incredible advice giver?).
Instead of thinking of artwork (including writing, dance, music) as a way to describe our dreams, what if what we made could reveal something to us that about the dream itself that we couldn’t know unless we brought the dream into reality in some way.
Many traditions, including my own, believe that spirit (some might call it the collective unconscious) speaks to us and offers us guidance in our dreams.
When we pay attention to our dreams by bringing them into material reality, it excites our spirits. It’s like we’ve invited them into a collaborative project. They will speak to us more if they know we’re listening.*
And speaking of listening…
I’m holding a live chat today on the Substack App to talk about working magic with your dreams. Pisces season is an invitation to the dream world! (And I will be talking about some of my favorite dream books!). Hope you can join us!
