On "being consistent"
Plus an important invitation to the BOS workshop this Sunday at 11am PT
Many readers tell me that their greatest challenge in their magical or spiritual practice is “being consistent.”
If you have ADHD like moi, you’ve definitely experienced this…
…you get excited about something like witchcraft; you recognize its benefits; you start off strong, buying the gear, lighting the candles on the full moon; then, before you know it…
… you haven’t pulled a tarot card, done a spell, or showed up for a ritual in months.
It’s demoralizing to time and again recognize the opportunities available to you, but not be able to consistently follow through on them.
For most of us, when we “fail” to be consistent, we can get down on ourselves, lamenting, “What am I doing? What’s my problem? Why can’t I show up for the things I want to do?”
When we get down on ourselves about our consistency – writing, witchcrafting, cleaning, whatever – it’s easy to do one of two things:
Give up and pivot to a “bad habit” (you know what yours are)
Or just turn to the next bright shiny object, thinking “aha! I wasn’t able to be consistent with that last thing… but this is the one that’s going to save me!”
But abandoning things we cherish is rooted in shame and fight/flight/freeze responses, not wise decision-making (as I’m sure you already know!).
For me, some of the biggest consequences of abandoning things I care about due to a lack of consistency are:
A slow erosion of self trust: “I can’t count on myself”
Increased shame and negative self talk: “What’s wrong with me?”
Feeling like a ghost in your own life: “I used to feel so connected, life used to be enchanted, now I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
If any of this sounds familiar to you, here’s the good news…
Enchantment, your magic, is about relationship. To yourself. To the world. It’s not a fixed state. It’s not a prize or an achievement. It is a RELATIONSHIP.
And unlike many, many other relationships, your magic will always be here for you no matter what you do. You can ALWAYS return to it. In fact…
…returning to your magic when you’ve fallen away from it is a practice that will help you with everything in your life.
Every time you make the choice to turn towards magic, you build stronger neural pathways to the lands of enchantment, which make it easier to return the next time.
Neural pathways can’t grow if you jump ship, but they become strong and sturdy every time you do an action that reaffirms your commitment to your own inner world and the Mystery in which you dwell.
I’ve created a something to help witches who drift and return (that is, most of us!) it’s called, “The Book of Shadows workshop” and it takes place this Sunday.
If you’re burned out on offerings, trust yourself. Don’t sweat it. But…
… if you’ve been struggling to stay connected to your magic or yourself recently, I created this workshop for you! Scroll down for more details.
Yours with love,
Amanda
