New Moon Ritual: Self as Collaboration

In conversation with my friend – the astrologer Rob Brezsny (check out his Substack, it will inspire you!) – this past week, we were discussing how the discrete self of the capitalist imagination is a myth. It doesn’t exist.

We are not isolated individual selves. We are collaborations, made up of our ancestors, the land, stars, time, bacteria, our cultural influences.

We do not and cannot exist alone. Remembering and acting upon this truth is not only pleasurable, and a cure for loneliness, it’s the essence of enchantment.

Speaking of himself, his goals, actions, and desires, Rob referred to himself as, “The Rob Brezsny Project”, which I thought was so cute.

We ARE the collaborative project of many beings: bacteria, our ancestors, our culture, water, soil, the plants we eat, the sun, the mites on our eyelashes. What does that mean for us, for who we are?

This New Moon let’s have a meeting with our collaborators and discuss our visions for the [insert your name here] project.

When we mine for the wisdom of the group, we find answers that lead us in stronger directions than we could ever go alone.

Journal Prompts

  • Who are your collaborators on the [insert your name here] project? Write about the goals, visions, gifts, and requirements of your collaborators (including “you”).

  • What are the conditions of success for your project in the short and long term? Remember, you’re not just considering your ego’s desires, but the desires of all of your collaborators. How can everyone feel seen, heard, and satisfied?

  • Based on what you’ve learned in your past experiences, how can you collaborate so that everyone feels good about what you’re doing? Where are some areas you’d like to grow or develop your collaboration skills?

Altar Prompt

After you’ve completed your journaling, build an altar to your collaborative project (you can use the correspondences at the end of the PDF attached below). Consider what you’d like to call in, what you’d like to let go of, and how you’d like to participate in the collaborative project that is you this month.

With love,

Amanda
