New Moon in Virgo Ritual: Black Dogs Guard Us, Shine Bright Upon Us
Spell to tame your demons and transform them into allies
In my New Moon ritual, the black dog of my grief showed up as a sound. A howl outside my door, but when I opened the door to find it, the dog was gone. Hiding in the brush, just beyond my line of sight. But, as soon as I lay back down to sleep, there it would go again, scratching at the door. Crying and wanting to be let in.
If you’ve been following along with Mystery Cult this Virgo season (reading the Witch Guide, or attending the Live Chat) you’ll know that…
… black dogs are the familiars of Hecate, goddess of thresholds and the crossroads, they guide us in places where we leave one world and enter another.
The Black Dogs are also the emotions that we’re running from, that we revile, that we don’t want to experience, that we push away, criticize, and resist.
The Black Dogs are the guardians of our own personal shadows. And the way to handle these beasts is not to run from them…
It’s to EMBRACE them. To tame these feral, skinny, matted creatures.
Our work is to befriend our black dogs, so that rather than bite us, they calm down and sleep at our feet while we’re writing our poetry.
Hecate is the goddess of witches. She walks with black dog at her side to remind her that she has the capacity to transform her fears into allies.
That’s what today’s New Moon in Virgo ritual is about, dear Initiates. I hope you join me for the follow along video/ritual included below.

Shadow work
Sigil magic
Magical instruction to transform struggle into empowerment

Set up an altar with water, a candle, salt/earth/or a stone, an incense holder
Have a journal and pen (a writing pen AND a marker)
A piece of scratch paper, and a piece of nice card stock or art paper
Burning herbs for smoke fumigation (clearing)
Tarot cards
Offerings for Mercury (ruler of Virgo), such as frankincense, lavender, silver coins, quicksilver, thyme, olive oil, spirits

To prepare, set up your altar and gather your ingredients. If you have a nice quiet place outside where you can still access the internet, that might be nice, otherwise, a quiet room to yourself works. If you have time, you can do the 13 minute Yoga for Anxiety video included in your Virgo Season Witch Guide (linked below) before or after the ritual to ground and center.
This ritual will take about an hour. I walk you through it step by step in the video below.
Ritual is a way to stay connected to what is sacred to us. Remember to take pleasure in it. Enjoy, and have fun.
