Once when I was about 28 years old, staying at a Zen Monastery in upstate New York, we were doing a partner exercise where we were supposed to give our impressions of each other when we first met.

My partner – a clear eyed, clear skinned yoga-girl type – said that when she’d first met me I’d seemed “insecure.”

It felt like such an insult. I remember being super pissed about it (probably because at that time, it was true. LOL).

I doubt that many people would say “Insecure” as their first impression of me now. In the past 18 years I’ve grown a lot.

But even if people DID say I was insecure now, I wouldn’t care. I’d just think they were projecting their own insecurities on to me. Because…

…I’m not insecure anymore!

This memory came up while I was planning the ritual for tonight’s Full Moon in Capricorn. The Capricorn/Cancer polarity is all about security, safety, and building a sense of home.

Dwelling in that memory got me wondering…

…why was I so offended that girl had said I was insecure? What was so shameful about it?

To be secure is to be safe, supported, to trust that you’re going to be okay. And I FOR SURE did NOT feel that way at 28, or at 38 for that matter.

We live in a scary world. We’re all traumatized by it.

I’d never learned that I was safe. And I always felt that whenever I managed to claw my way to safety, at any moment some big bomb could drop and my whole life be blown apart.

It makes sense that I would be insecure when my sense of safety was so tenuous!

But really, what had offended me was that my sense of self back then was all bound up in how other people saw me.

Without external validation, I had no sense of self worth.

I didn’t trust myself to care for me, because my internal monologue was the opposite of caring. It was brutal… always listing the things I was doing wrong, scrutinizing my appearance, worrying that I wasn’t good enough.

I’d been looking to the yoga-girl to validate who I was.

But, thing was, I didn’t even LIKE that girl. She seemed like one of those people who think they’re ever so spiritual when really they’re all judgy.

Why did HER opinion of me matter more than my OWN opinion of me? Especially since I’d only just met her!

Truth is, if we wait for someone else to make us feel secure, we might end up waiting a long time. Maybe forever.

Come meet celebrities here in Los Angeles — having millions of people fawning over them often results in their feeling MORE insecure, rather than less. Someone else is always going to have more fans, more Oscar-worthy roles, more money. Is going to be newer, younger, hotter, more talented, etc.

External validation is fickle.

When we have a strong sense of who we are – when we have the TOOLS to validate ourselves – not only do we feel more safe in the world, but we also tend to draw into our lives people who are able to care for us in a way that makes us feel loved and safe.

Tonight at my Full Moon in Capricorn Ritual, we’ll be working on cultivating a sense of inner safety, and a conviction in our own self worth.

Safety is a FEELING. It happens inside the body.

(Of course safety is also having our material and emotional needs met, but, baby steps!)

While witchcraft can’t make the dangers of the world go away, it CAN help us cultivate trust in ourselves so we can meet those dangers with confidence.

Come home to yourself and your community with us at our Full Moon Ritual tonight at 6pm PST. More info below! Happy Full Security Moon!

Yours ever,

Amanda

When: Tonight, Monday, 7/3/23, 6pm PST

Don’t worry, if you can’t be there, you’ll get the replay!

Capricorn is the sign of the builder, the one who constructs stable structures that will keep us safe and protected. It’s the sign of the goat who can climb sheer cliffs and always have a strong sense of their own center. On this moon, we will practice cultivating an internal sense of safety, returning home to ourselves.

This ceremony will include:

  • Grounding meditation

  • A clearing practice to deal with challenges to our self worth

  • A tarot pull

  • Journal Prompts

  • Drawing spells and working with stones

  • Discussion of the Spirit of the Season

  • Ritual to find your inner sanctuary

How to prepare / please bring:

  • bring five or six small objects that remind you of yourself, how you see yourself, who you are right now (don’t overthink this, just use your intuition)

  • make a simple altar with water, a stone, a candle and incense

  • have your journal and writing implement handy

  • in addition to a journal please bring paper and drawing supplies (doesn’t have to be fancy, and you don’t need drawing skills)

  • bring your tarot cards or any other cards (like Oracle cards)

  • take a few moments before the ceremony to ground, center, and get into your body, and create a sense of sacred space
