Inside: Mini-discussion of what’s fun about creating Book's of Shadows, and invitation to the BOS workshop on Saturday at 11am.

My Book of Shadows has our collective card (the Hermit) and my personal card of the year (The Devil). The little flower wand came in the package with my new drum by Teagan West.

I’m so excited for class 1 of our Hermit Year workshop series this Saturday because it will primarily be a day of MAKING. It feels good to invest time, skill, and attention on your magical tools.

Setting up your Book of Shadows (BOS) for the year is a powerful creative act.

Having a BOS ready for action is an act of commitment to your magic, your spiritual practice, and your processes of introspection and skill building in the Hermit year.

This workshop is going to be fun, festive, relaxing and juicy. A place to play, explore, and activate your inspiration about the possibilities for the year to come.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Free and monthly subscribers to Mystery Cult can purchase all three Hermit Year workshop sessions for $291. But…

Ingredients for Saturday:

I sent the ingredients below out a few weeks ago, so hopefully you’ve had a chance to grab them. Please note, I’ve added a few items (in bold at the top of the list below) so please go through and make sure you have them all (or something similar) before the workshop on Saturday.

Even though at first glance the ingredients list might feel like a lot, many of these things you’ll already have at home - you just have to gather them.

If you don’t have the art supplies, I recommend you support your local art supply store, but you can also grab them online if necessary. And if you don’t have the time or resources to do that, just grab what you have available and make do with what you have!

IMPORTANT NOTE: The point of this workshop is TO HAVE FUN creating your Book of Shadows - NOT to do it exactly “right” or exactly like me. If you have materials you like to work with, like specific markers, or paints, or colored paper to collage in, bring it! Let’s have fun creating together.

  • A magazine for collaging (if accessible)

  • Scissors

  • A wet paper towel or washcloth

  • A sharpie or markers

  • Gelly Roll acrylic markers, you really only need the white one, which is about $2.50. (I find these to be really handy for writing on the cover of journals, you can even write on stones and other slippery surfaces with them, you don’t NEED to have them, but they’re fun to use. They’ll be at any art supply story, but you also might be able to get them at CVS).

  • A black ink pen

  • Print out the PDF attached to this email (scroll down to the bottom)

  • A blank journal (your Book of Shadows for the Hermit Year, examples here) - if you want to use your BOS from last year, that’s totally fine. I will give you suggestions for how to do that in class.

  • Glue (I use PVA glue, but even Elmer’s will do)

  • A paint brush (to apply the glue)

  • Graphite transfer paper (here’s an example) - note, you can also make this by rubbing ashes all over the back of a piece of thin paper, it’s just a messier option

  • An eraser

  • An embossing tool (here’s an example, but a regular pencil also works no problem)

  • A photocopy or print out of your favorite version of the Hermit card - or you can use the ones provided in the PDF below

  • Watercolor paints (you don’t need many colors, in fact, if you only use one color and white that’s totally fine - I will provide you with examples during the class) - you can also use markers

  • Watercolor paint brushes (again, you don’t need to break the bank for this, just use what’s available)

  • A candle and matches

  • Incense or burning herbs

  • Salt

  • A cup of water for blessing your journal

This is going to be fun!
