Dear Witches,
As the New Year dawns, I’m thinking about the power of witchcraft to transform us from the inside out.
It may be hard for the contemporary witch to truly, on a gut deep level, “believe” in spirits, magic, connection to our ancestors, witchcraft in general.
We might doubt ourselves and think maybe we just like the idea of it. We live in a rationalist culture after all, we believe in science.
Is the cake offering we leave on our altar really being eaten by our dead great-great-great-grandmother whom we never met?
When we call in the elements at the beginning of a ceremony, should we really believe the spirits arrive there in the room, like invisible genies ready to grant us our wishes?
The answer is: yes!
Consider it this way: your ancestors live inside of you, literally, in your DNA, in your ideas, your passions, your dreams.
When you give your ancestors offerings, it is a ritual means of communicating, reinforcing, and transforming your inner world. It’s a way to keep your ancestors alive within you, to cultivate that relationship, to them and to the collective unconscious.
The spirits of witchcraft aren’t imaginary beings like Caspar the Friendly Ghost, instead they are the very real minerals, symbols, inspirations, elements, memories, languages, mythologies, and songs that make up who you are. That is enchantment.
When you give offerings, or cast spells, you are feeding your connection to spirit and the magic within you. When you practice magic, you change who you ARE.
When you refresh the water on your altar, you’re literally refreshing your relationship to spirit, your ancestors, and your magical practice.
There are multiple ways to keep your relationship to magic alive, you can do it through your altar, your spells, your rituals, by celebrating the holidays, the esbats, by invoking, chanting, meditating.
(All things you’ll learn how to do in the Baby Witches Start Here download below, btw).
Remember that witchcraft changes and transmutes your inner world, which affects all worlds.
Witchcraft is medicine, and as you practice it it alchemizes within you, nourishing you, changing your chemistry, your moods and desires, and thus how reality operates around you.
The more you work with it, the greater your power as a witch becomes, all because of the strength of your relationships to the beings you’re working with, human, more-than-human, and Otherworldly.
In that way, witchcraft changes not only who we are as individuals, it can and DOES change the collective through RELATIONSHIP. Witches are stewards of spirit, doing our part to keep enchantment alive for humanity.
So roll up your bell sleeves, witches! It’s 2024 and we’ve got witching to do!
In love and magic,
Amanda
