I read a beautiful quote about nature today by Sondra Fraleigh* that said:

I delineate nature in terms of character and present-centered consciousness. Nature is an interwoven dance of tendencies and potentials as much as anything.

Taken out of context this quote feels a little abstract so let’s unpack it a little.

We’re in Taurus Season, and tomorrow is the Taurus New Moon, and Taurus corresponds to earth/nature.

In this quote, Fraleigh is qualifying what she means by nature because in academia there’s this whole big discussion about whether or not nature even exists.

Most Indigenous languages don’t have a word for nature for instance, since in those languages there is no split between the human-world and everything else.

In English, we default to using the word “nature” to refer to the living biosphere because our language carries within it a philosophy of separation.

Humanity is cut off from the natural world in our merchant’s tongue. Since we’re separate from nature, we’re free to exploit it (funny how that works).

I know none of you love the idea of separation/exploitation, I don’t either. Which is why Fraleigh’s reframing of nature appeals to me.

In her view, nature is present-centered consciousness. Nature is the “right-now” that surrounds us, fills us, moves through us, that is us and our connection to everything in this moment, right where we are.

Nature is the here/now.

The here/now is full of possibilities and mysteries. It’s an interweaving of intelligences, challenges and pleasures.

If we think of witchcraft as a nature religion, in this context the practices of witchcraft are those that bring us back into the enchanted here/now of nature.

This present is where the possibilities are. It’s the place where we can find ourselves. And the place where we meet the ones we love. The here/now is where we create.

Below, I give you three simple strategies for awakening to nature in celebration of the Taurus New Moon tomorrow (Sunday, 4/27/25).

May these strategies serve to bring you back into the present moment. May you find pleasure and power here/now.

Yours ever,

Amanda

P.S. Please don’t forget that TONIGHT is the dark moon. Now is the time to sweep the ashes off your altar an offer them to Hecate at the crossroads.

3 Simple Ways to Celebrate the New Moon in Taurus

  1. Create an altar for the New Moon. Build it as a temple to nature, to the here/now. Place sacred objects on the altar that call you back into the present moment, and that inspire and delight you to return, again and again to right where you are. In the spirit of Taurus, ruled by Venus, the goddess of love, give offerings to the things you love in your life right now at this altar.

  2. In your Book of Shadows, write an ode to what is blooming in your life right now, to what is blooming “in nature,” meaning whatever is here and present for you. The ode could be very short (like three lines) simply acknowledging what is awake and coming into flower. Remember, attention is a form of devotion. By noticing what is blooming you honor and encourage it.

  3. A great, super simple thing to bring you into the here/now is to go outside and listen to the 5-minute Taurus Season meditation I recorded for my reciprocal subscribers this month (below). It’s a beautiful guided journey into the here/now that you can use to let go of worry and reclaim beauty as Taurus always intended for us.
