Hermits hold an important place in our collective cultural imaginary.

One of my favorite hermits appears in Arthurian legend as the Old Man of the Woods, who provides spiritual and moral council to Knights struggling with inner conflicts or who are in need of guidance in their quests.

Following my theory that the Cards of the Year are classes offered collectively to humanity, that means that in 2025 we’re all invited to sit and study at the feet of the Hermit together.

What does the Old One of the Woods want us to know?

We must listen with our senses to find out. To encounter the Hermit, we’re invited to begin our collective pilgrimage.

Typically, the Hermit, the ancient one, the crone, lives in wild, desolate spaces.

The world “hermit” comes from the Greek, eremites, meaning “desert dweller.”

Of course, when we go in search of the Hermit, it is into our own inner wastelands that we must travel.

A pilgrimage is a sacred journey undertaken for the purpose of spiritual growth; what that means will be different for each person.

Spiritual growth in the Hermit Year might look like:

• increasing your ability to be present for your life

• forgiving yourself, forgiving others, letting go of shame and resentment

• liberating oneself from the mindnumbing clutches of Social Media

• awareness of your purpose, cultivating a sense of meaning

• expelling the social conditioning that keeps us blind to the extreme violence required to keep this system going

• recognizing and reordering patterns that cause damage in our lives

• forging more authentic, intimate connections

• finding joy and gratitude in the struggle

• developing a deep and personal sacred practice

Pilgrimage: Your Guide to the Hermit Year

I will have a lot more to say on what the Hermit Year will offer us in the coming months, but in the meantime, I wanted to invite you to participate in my upcoming 3-part Hermit Year workshop series…

Class 1: Saturday 21 December, 11am pst - Book of Shadows

This lesson will help you prepare for the contemplative work required to make the most of the Hermit Year. It will help you keep a record of your journey and practice mindfulness as you go.

Class 2: Saturday 28 December, 11am pst - Strength to Hermit

A lesson on the cards of the year and their meanings, helping you make sense of the teachings of the Strength Year (2024), and practice the tools necessary for the Hermit Year (2025). You’ll also have the opportunity to reflect on and learn about your own personal cards of the year.

Class 3: Saturday 4 January, 11am pst - Calling in the Guardians Workshop

The Hermit is often thought to represent a wise guide or elder who can help you. In this class we will learn to cultivate relationships with spiritual powers that can support and guide us on our pilgrimage throughout the year.

Each workshop includes a downloadable PDF, a Live Call (plus replay recording), and many exercises and activities to support you in your practice.
