Dear Devotee of the Mysteries, Happy Sagittarius Season!
One of the things I’ve been wrestling with in my magical practice lately is astrology’s focus on the stars, the cosmos, when personally I’m such an earth lover and feel like earth needs all the attention she/they can get right now.
But I still love astrology! It’s fun. And given how soul crushing capitalist colonialism is, fun is always welcome. It’s even rebellious. (Side note: Fun and rebellion are very Sagittarian).
So, as much as I can, I like to find ways to integrate astrology with my practices as a witch. Creativity happens in the liminal spaces, where different ecosystems come together. And that’s something that Sagittarius knows intimately, liminal being that they are.
Sagittarius is the only sign in the Zodiac that is part human, part beast: the Centaur.
Centaurs are known for being randy and rowdy. They’re constantly on the move. They like to stampede across the plains, feel the wind in their hair, shoot arrows in the thunder of their pounding hooves.
As an ADHD writer witch (with dyslexia), sometimes I have an overwhelming fear that “I’m not doing it right.” (A lot of neurodivergent people grow up feeling that they’re always off somehow and can’t quite figure out why).
One way that fear can manifest is by constantly checking what other people are doing to see if my work is comparable with theirs. But you know what that means?
It means that, on some level, I believe they know what they’re doing more than I do. What’s weird is this belief that “other people know better” persists no matter how “successful” I get, or how many accomplishments I rack up, which let me know that I MUST be doing something right.
Anyway…
…My point is that Sagittarius is the sign of adventure, it implies risk. Connecting with your animal nature means trusting your INSTINCTS.
Trusting your instincts does NOT mean checking to see what everyone else is doing to make sure you’re doing you right.
And here’s the exciting thing: I’ve noticed that when I focus on what I WANT to do, rather than what other people are doing, THAT is when people most resonate with my work.
So this Sagittarius season, I encourage you to listen to your instincts, trust your enthusiasm, be willing to risk speaking your own vision into the world. ESPECIALLY in the area of your life that Sagittarius occupies in your chart.

Colorado Springs
I think it was Hannah Arendt that said that Totalitarianism comes from loneliness, and wherever I look around me I see that it’s true. Club Q in Colorado Springs was full of LGBTQIA+ people and their allies loving each other, laughing together, singing, dancing, supporting one another. It’s evidence of the profound loneliness of colonial culture that more than half the people in our country are so lonely and isolated in the delusions of their hatred that they would seek to destroy whatever love they see. Joy of living has become their enemy.
I remember reading a study by a Congolese scientist once who wrote about how young male elephants in the Congo were so traumatized by the poaching of their families, and so lost without the matriarchs, that they went on violent rampages. The connections of kinship, to the land, to our ancestors, to each other, have been eroded for so long in the Western world that we’ve forgotten that life could be otherwise, violence, hate, and loneliness just feel like the “natural” way of things now. Violence is how we tell stories, what we watch on TV, and what we do to each other. And for me the worst part about it is that the violence perpetuates itself, it makes us lose hope that it could be any other way.
What I adore most about Queer people is their commitment to joy and love. The culture that we live in, the culture that surrounds us on all sides, has pursued us relentlessly, violently, for centuries, and yet, we don’t submit. We still love.
LGBTQIA+ people are magic. Wherever the rot of colonialism has severed the filaments of kinship, Queer people, with their fabulousness, and sparkles, send their spores of love out into the world to create new bonds of connection. Our love cannot be destroyed and it will be here until the end of the universe.
